I am Dr. Mojtaba Mafi M.D., Medical Doctor/ Physician, Graduate of Tehran university, School of Medicine with honor. I passed post graduate courses on Nutrition, Gastroenterology and hepatology, Obesity treatment and diabetes approved by Medical sciences university successfully.I am associate of Iran Hepatitis Network and Gastroenterology and Hepatology research center, Middle East Liver Diseases Center (MELD). I studied on fatty liver and related metabolic disorders among Iranian families from 2015 and currently publishing the results of our study and research about fatty liver and hyperlipidemia, diabetes and nutrition as study director and clinician associate member of Hepatitis Network.

John D. Loike, PhD serves as Director for Special Programs for the Center for Bioethics and is the Co-Director for Graduate Studies in the Department of Physiology and Cellular Biophysics at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. He is also an Advisory Board member of the Columbia University Center for the Study of Science and Religion, creator and faculty editor of the Columbia University Journal of Bioethics, and course instructor for Crossroads in Bioethics, a course for undergraduates offered each spring at Columbia College. He has co-organized several national and international conferences on genetics and Bioethics, and he is the founding co-director of BIOCEP (BIOethical Cross-cultural Education Program), a two-week intensive summer internship program designed to promote educational and cultural exchange in medical ethics (medical tourism, emerging infections, stem cell research, reproductive medicine, etc.) with students from Mahidol University in Bangkok, Thailand.

Dr. Loike’s areas of interest in bioethics include stem cells, cloning, neuroethics, bioterrorism, and the interface of science and religion.

Dr. Michael Nova is the Chief Innovation Officer and founding team member of Pathway Genomics. He is the inventor of all wellness genetic tests, and also the Pathway-IBM/Watson mobile application: OME. His scientific career began at the Salk Institute with Nobel Laureate Roger Guillemin, researching the genetics of growth factors. Michael was the founder/CEO of wireless drug discovery company Discovery Partners Inc. (Nasdaq: DPII; $150M IPO). Dr. Nova is an IBM and Metagenics Advisory Board Member; the 2005 World Economic Forum (WEF) Technology Pioneer Award Winner; and the physician of record on the first person to have their entire genome sequenced by Illumina (2009). He has 35 issued patents, and likes to surf in Indonesia.

Type 2 diabetes (T2D) and obesity are complex disorders that constitute major public health problems. The evidence for familial aggregation of both T2D and obesity is substantial. To date, more than 150 genetic loci are associated with the development of monogenic, syndromic, or multifactorial forms of T2D or obesity; many within lipid and carbohydrate metabolism pathways. SNPs located in or near FTO, MC4R, MC3R, POMC, LEP, LEPR, PLIN1, APOA5, LIPC, FABP2, INSIG2, IRS1, GIPR, ADBR2, ADRB3, UCP1, RETN, ADIPOQ, IL6, PPARG, TCF7L2, and CLOCK, among others, are implicated in both diabetes and obesity gene networks, pleomorphic with nutritional and metabolic traits. A personalized nutritional approach, based not only on phenotypic traits but also on genetic make-up, may help to control body weight and obesity. Recent advances in nutrigenetics, bioinformatics and genome-wide association metabolomics studies are set to unleash a revolution in personalized nutrition. In this symposium, we discuss the evidence concerning the genetic contribution to individual risk of T2D and obesity, and explore the potential role of nutritional and environmental mechanisms.

Human genetics

Dr. Dharambir Sanghera’s research specializes in the study of molecular and genetic-epidemiological aspects of common complex diseases, including diabetes, coronary heart disease, obesity, and metabolic syndrome. Using expertise in wide range of molecular and statistical genetics concepts, her laboratory is studying the interplay between environmental and genetic factors involved in complex disease pathogenesis on family- and population-based datasets. The long-term goals of Dr. Sanghera’s research are; 1) to identify the underlying molecular mechanisms associated with cardiovascular disorders, 2) to improve the classification of the disease process by identifying genome-wide patterns associated with ethnic variation, and 3) to discover new therapeutic targets which can inform the design of early prevention and treatment therapy among disparate populations

Rare genetic diseases

David S Schrump is a Surgical Chief who oversees clinical and translational research pertaining to thoracic and gastrointestinal malignancies, including the development of innovative molecular approaches to the diagnosis and treatment of these neoplasms. He has pioneered the development of epigenomic therapies for thoracic cancers. Using unique in vitro models and correlative experiments with surgical specimens, he has characterized epigenetic responses to tobacco carcinogens, and identified novel therapeutic targets in lung and esophageal cancers and pleural mesotheliomas. His clinical protocols have demonstrated that chromatin remodeling agents simultaneously induce growth arrest and augment immunogenicity of thoracic malignancies; these efforts have provided rationale for combining epigenetic regimens with immunotherapies for these neoplasms.

Dr. Bennani-Baiti, a former Howard Hughes Scholar and Human Genetics Fellow at University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, carried out research into the molecular mechanisms of gene regulation at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. He later joined the faculty of St. Louis University School of Medicine wherein he continued this work. He currently leads several research programs at the Children′s Cancer Research Institute into the systems biology of childhood cancers, with a particular interest in sarcomas and other mesenchyme-derived tumors. He is also interested in the deregulation of signaling pathways (e.g. p53, Notch) and miRNAs in cancer, in epigenetics and epigenomics, and in novel methods to inferring tumor biomarkers and drug targets from Omics datasets. Dr. Bennani-Baiti is an active member of the American Association for Cancer Research, AACR Pediatric Cancer Working Group, Epigenetics Society, International Society for Systems Biology, and Society for Mathematical Biology.

Alyssa Alabassi is a British entrepreneur and UK trained and qualified practicing surgeon with extensive knowledge of the various layers of the health system in UK. She worked in an Advanced Computation Laboratory at Cancer Research UK devising IT solution for connected and integrated care pathways. She chaired international business meetings on Big Data, Population Based Solutions, Predictive Analysis and Connected Objects. Her research interest is in Breast Cancer and Familial Breast Disease and has successfully setup prevention clinics for patients at high risk of developing breast cancer.

Kári Stefánsson, M.D., Dr. Med. has served as President, Chief Executive Officer and a Director since he founded deCODE genetics in August 1996. Dr. Stefánsson was appointed the Chairman of the Board of Directors of deCODE genetics in December 1999. From 1993 until April 1997, Dr. Stefánsson was a professor of Neurology, Neuropathology and Neuroscience at Harvard University. From 1983 to 1993, he held faculty positions in Neurology, Neuropathology and Neurosciences at the University of Chicago. Dr. Stefánsson received his M.D. and Dr. Med. from the University of Iceland and is board-certified in neurology and neuropathology in the United States. He has published numerous articles on the genetics of common/complex diseases and has been among the leaders of the world in the discovery of variants in the sequence of the human genome that associate with the risk of common/complex traits. Dr. Stefánsson was chosen by Time magazine as one of the 100 most influential men of the year for 2007 and by Newsweek as one of the 10 most important biologists of the 21 century. He was the recipient of the Jakobus Award 2007, The World Glaucoma Association Award for present scientific impact 2007, The European Society of Human Genetics Award 2009, and The Andre Jahre Award 2009.
